The first citrus crops arrive recently in the markets. Premiering arriving mandarins, “chenwas”, the “tanjerines” but also the first orange. The season this year looks particularly good. On the side of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, it is estimated that citrus harvest will break records. Estimated at 560,000 tonnes for the 2016/2017 season, it would far exceed that of last season which recorded 380,000 tonnes.
Citrus fruits occupy a paramount importance in the Tunisian agricultural sector, and one of the strategic products to which the state attaches great importance. The citrus industry employs more than 11,600 producers. The sector allows the use of nearly 3 million days of work for casual labor.
