Dubbed ‘Tabarka millennium’, the project is expected to contribute to reducing unemployment and launch a new dynamic economic  in the region. But this is not the opinion of residents and representatives of civil society who have expressed their opposition to the project, saying it will take ownership of large areas of the city and will have negative consequences on aesthetics of Tabarka, its heritage and architectural style, including the fort Genoese and needles (rocks shaped by erosion).

The people are also protesting against the exploitation of leisure port, one of the few areas for families. According to them, the land had been earmarked for the construction of industrial zones but were sold as bare land, and have not benefited the region.

The people are demanding a review of the preliminary technical study of the project in order to respect the aesthetics of the city including needles and said range ‘of Béjaouas’, also calling to find another place for the unit maintenance of yachts in order to avoid pollution of the area.

They proposed the creation of an industrial area in Ouled Yahia, located 1.5 km from the airport and resolve land problems for some land for their exploitation. They expressed their willingness to support the project provided it complies with the aesthetics of the city and its cultural cachet.

Tabarka architects claimed, meanwhile, that the project does not comply with the development plan of the area and the regulations protecting the coastline, adding that it will harm the natural and forest resources. They asked the authorities to review the project components by providing the aesthetics of the city as it is still useful for the region and its people, especially the unemployed.
