This project falls under the Fund program of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which aims to fight against the main threats to the environment, including soil degradation and loss of biodiversity.

An agreement in principle was granted in October last year, this project will be realized in cooperation with the GEF and the World Bank (WB) said the official, adding that the project aims to include improving management of the oasis environment resources (water, soil and biodiversity).

This project will cover the oasis of Zarat (Governorate of Gabes), Nouil (Kebili governorate) and oases of Chebika, Tamaghza and Mides in Tozeur and El Gtar in Gafsa.

A delegation of experts was dispatched to the area by the World Bank to develop a sustainable oasis development strategy. According to the Regional Director of Environmental Saharan south, this project will be duly approved in mid-2014 to start implementation in early 2015. The EGF contributes to financing the project with investments of nearly $ 9.6 million dinars ($ 6 million).
