Founded by the Numidians, Tabarka found its golden age under Roman Empire. It was the main polychromatic marble, cork, and cereals exportator at that time. It also witnessed one of the most decisive civilisation battles between Arabs and Berbers. Indeed, the last Berber queen, the legendary Kahena, was defeated in 702 in Tabarka by Hassan Ibn Numan.
The roots of the name “Tabarka” lie in the Berber culture. It literally means “country of heathers”. Being the heart of Khroumire, the region is renowned for its halieutic marine resources, cork oaks, corals, as well as a majestic rock on which is built a somptuous Genoan fort.
